I have been teaching 7th grade US History here at Lee Jr. High for 4 years. Before that I taught elementary for 10 years. I decided to go back to school 4 years ago and get my Masters degree in American History. Since then I have avidly sought out additional educational opportunities to deepen my content knowledge. This summer I was one of 23 chosen out of over 300 teachers around the country tot receive a spot in the Gilder Lehrman teaching seminar at Mt. Vernon. I spent a week living on the Mt. Vernon campus and studying daily with renound historian Gordon Wood. It was a once in a lifetime experience that has made me a much better history teacher.
I use a vast array of primary documents in my class, as I feel that learning directly from the people who lived the history is a much more interesting way to go about it. We analyze these documents and write responses or interpretations of them.
I also try to teach note taking, and organizational skills in my room. It is my belief that these skills have to be taught, they do not come naturally to the average student. We use Interactive notebooks as a springboard for learning these skills.
For the second half of the year we will be studying the War of 1812 through the Civil War.
Next year we will be taking Lee students to the Presidential Inauguration!
